Following its split with Ulta Beauty, Target's new beauty section has welcomed hundreds of brands entering traditional retail distribution for the first time.

Target launched a dedicated beauty section in stores and online after ending its partnership with Ulta Beauty. The new offering has become a significant distribution channel for hundreds of brands—many of which had previously operated exclusively through e-commerce or direct-to-consumer models. The curated selection spans mass-market to premium price points, appealing to varied consumer preferences and shopping occasions.

This development reflects a broader shift in U.S. retail strategy. Large retailers with established store networks increasingly expand product categories and brand portfolios to capture market share and customer loyalty. Target's beauty initiative not only captures traffic that previously shopped Ulta, but also provides emerging and digitally native brands access to nationwide physical distribution, creating mutual benefits.

For brands, Target's scale and omnichannel presence—physical stores combined with e-commerce—offers a low-friction path to nationwide retail penetration without the logistical burden of D2C fulfillment. As Target builds out its beauty assortment, it establishes itself as a meaningful competitor in beauty retail beyond the appliances and apparel for which it has been traditionally known.
